Und der Gewinner ist...

Wir haben viele schöne Antworten auf unsere Stipendiumsfrage erhalten! Wir hoffen, dass jede/jeder Einzelne einen Gewinn ziehen konnte daraus, durch Lernen- durch Meditieren über diese Frage. Da man sich jeder Frage aus zehn Richtungen annähern kann, und da jede Person ihre eigene Wahrnehmung hat, trägt jede Antwort einen Teil Wahrheit. Aber eine Antwort musste ausgewählt werden.

To be a student first I think there has to be the will or wish to learn something but that´s not enough. You have to be open to everything, be aware, and for that your eyes, your ears, your mind and your heart have to be clear, wide, silent with no fears or with courage to leave them behind and accept what´s arriving and teaching to you.
The patience is also another quality to be or not a student, so maybe today something doesn´t teach you because you want to learn right now and this desire is an obstacle to learn. I have to accept that I have to be prepared for receiving the teaching and sometimes it´s not up to me, that´s why life brings us second, thirds and fourths opportunities to learn the full teaching.
I´m not a student when I´m blind because of my painful emotions like anger, desire, pride, sadness, impatience, fear or insecurity and closed to protect myself. When I don´t do an effort to see, understand and catch what life wants to teach me and feel sorry for me, resting paralyzed blaming the others and don´t taking my responsibility.
For that I have to start accepting that I don´t know or that I know just one part of the total that can be the truth and that I need help from the others to make me see the other side, that´s why I´m not a student when I live thinking I have the truth.

Its true everything teaches but being a student is a totally different phenomena. Let us first observe what is being a student? Is it being someone who is learning some knowledge, doing meditation, trying to achieve moksha, following dharma principles etc? One can question endlessly on these lines but my life experience teaches i am a student only if i am able to help my fellow beings in their individual journeys, rest is of tremendous importance yet nothing compared to being of service of my fellow beings. There is where i am really being a student. So when am i not being a student when i am unable to help or be of service to my fellow beings. May our life be full of service.

In order to learn something as a student in a broader sense, one needs to be conscious and aware of what they are doing. Consequently, if somebody is unconscious, drunk, on drugs or sleeping (without dreaming) they cannot learn. However, one can of course learn from, for instance, a bad hangover when they are conscious again. And, of course, one also needs to be open for learning - including teachers.

“When”, "everything", "teach", “student" and “master” are imputed by the mind in samsara. When this is thoroughly realized, one realises the nature of one's mind, which is the guru (master). The student becomes a master.

When we are in the state of ignorance, we are not a student. In order to be a student we need a teacher. When we are not aware of this learning process, we are not a student. When we not realize that our tacher is everything on the world, our parents, our wife or husband, our children, our enemy and so on, we are not a student. What I can tell about this question is: I think it's not a matter of "when" but a question of "why" (why am I not a student). And when I try to answer the question "when am I not a student", it means that I place myself as a teacher, that I am not. Best regards

If dare to choose my own way in that something what can teach me anything
and dare to follow my own path during this lessons that i encounter on my life path, because by following my own hart and to go down to the choices which here come after i am a teacher for myself.

I am not a student when I have not the mind of a student, which is:

an open mind and heart,awake and always ready to learn from whatever there is.

But when I am sleeping, in illusions, happy, sad, angry, afraid, for a moment looking in the other direction, when I am hungry, lazy, in love, watching t.v., need to express my best opinions, etc.
and when at that same moment I am completely identified with my state of being, then I am not a student.

May be something inside of me doesn't want to wake up to see and learn. May be I don't believe that I can do it. May be I want holidays and forget.

It is because I know and am convinced that I am a student, that again and again I remember to open my mind and heart and keep it open. Then I can recognize and accept all (or a lot) of the lessons.

It is an active attitude, it is a choice, to welcome all of life's events, hard or not and just look and be with them, be open to them. To be always there, if necessary interacting in an open spontaneous way (at best).

But when I have fallen asleep, sweet dreams or nightmares and I don't wake up,
then there is no student to remember that he is a student.

Ones answer to this question seems to be only relivent to the one answering it. We all have differant questions and we all seem to have differant answers. Each answer is neither wrong or right less or greater in value. Our answers will always change as our moment is always changing as our life is always changing, constantly changing.

What matters to me is not the answer to the question but that we all are searching for the answers to the questions within.

I would say if one is a student, everything can teach you something.

If everything can teach me something and I fail to learn from it, it is out of a complexity of reasons.
I recognize that my "masters" should become a perfect and clear mirroring of myself .But this mirror is often distortioned on one side by humbleness and victimisation and on the other extreme by pride and egotism.Therefore, the problem lies in the core of myself.Even though I acknoledge it,there is always something deeper and more confusing to draw me back.
But what keeps me going straight and curageous is that he other face of the mirror, always remains serene, peaceful and perfect.

When one is not giving.

To receive a teacher one has to be ready. To learn from all that is around.

Learning requires some desire - some motivation - to give and share the knowledge. One cannot share is one is caught up with just receiving.

Receiving 'knowledge' is simply self cultivation. It is motivated by increasing ones own level - for whatever purpose.

Budha's deep wisdom came from this understanding enlightenment.

In order to learn from something or somebody, awareness is necessary.
To become aware, an open mind, regardfulness and reflection are necessary.
Either you are aware of what something or somebody teaches you - or you aren't.
If you are not aware in the situation itself - if you are open-minded and regardfully reflect on the situation and your emotions / reactions in that situation later, you can still learn from it. However, if you are not aware in the situation itself, and if you don't reflect on it later - shortly, if you don't even TRY to become aware, you won't learn.
Therefore, you are not a student when you are not aware of being able to learn from everything - or at least you try to become aware of it by an open-minded reflection.

The key to understanding this question is in the word "can".

A wise person might answer such a question with the response "never! We are always a student, seeing as everything has something to teach us!"

However, there are many people who are not paying attention, are not awake to the possibility of learning, or unlearning, or do not see communication with mind-at-large as important, rather being driven by a set of priorities determined by their conditioning, fears, hopes and mental elaborations.

When a person is not a student it is either out of ignorance or choice. The ignorance of the belief that there is nothing of value to be learned from continous consciousness in the moment, or, knowing this, the choice not to learn from everything by focussing on imagined or remembered situations.

You are also not a student if the lesson to be learned is one you already know.

For me this question includes the answer because in english and german dictionaries, a student is a person, who WOULD LIKE TO study:

I can learn something of all, learning in the meaning of learning something new, because all is also what I don't observe. Learning, what we understand mostly under learning, is in real recognizing.

To be a Student, is only an illusion, same illusion as everything. I only can study illusions, but no reality. Reality only can be seen from behind the border, which was passed by Buddha and Jesus Christ.
In clear light with the open mind in holy spitit then reality will rise, that everybody is a master who knows all.
This enligthed Person, who came to this top of wisdom, goes as a Buddha into "Nirvana" or (in other language and cultur for example) as a Christ "up to the right side of god in heaven".
All the borders and differences are illusions, only the ONE or the ALL ist reality. The mind, that knows, that he is ONE with the Others and in "god of heaven" and god and heaven are in him, this person is ONE whith god: his mind is in nirvana, his body only on earth.
This is all we can reach to know behind great illusion: So, to be a Student, for to reach knowlege and wisdom, is an illusion path, beyond this path is nothing real, what can be studied.We hav to learn, that we all believe on things, paths, light and dark, all construktions of mind have to throw away. Then we know, that we never have been student, but all time be master: Only we forgot.

There are many answers as there are questions. When you stop looking you may believe that you have answered the question, but the truth may simply be that you have not answered the right question. There are many who lead and teach but few are humble enough or honest enough or open enough to admit there own doubt. Humility is expected for one to learn but it is honesty with oneself that is the key. So if I am honest with myself then I am open to learning, to become a student of life. You are not a student of life if you do not question or seek the truth and even if you think you have the answer you should still be open and honest in yourself.

In my opinion, a teacher or the taught of any kinds, race, religion, culture, etc. have the potential to be whatever they want. Meaning to say that when our hearts and minds are made to open willfully and mindfully, then we have great possibilities of learning from any living being. However one will cease to become a student when one shuts down one's mind due to all the negative perceptions, ego, hatred, illusions, ignorance, etc. For example, if a student dislike a teacher due to some reasons, he cease to see the positive aspects of the teaching as well as the personality of the teacher. The hatred in him stand in the way of seeing the positive sides of the teacher. Therefore he is not a student inspite of being a student.

The solution to this question seems to be in the "CAN teach you something". It seems, that there must be specific conditions, that I can become a student. The most important conditions seems to be open (using all senses and experiencing things at they are), trustful (nothing can really harm) end empty (from own concepts) like a good student. If I don't accept to be a lifelong student, nothing can teach me anything.

When I became a parent and a volunteer working with children, I learned something everytime I taught. What surprises me most is that even at my age I am still not only learning about others but about myself as well. Everybody is a student, either studying hard or not paying attention to own lessons. We are all on the learning path to great Wisdom looking for the Equilibrium but with own will and intention. The connection with (the knowledge of)the Universe can teach us more than using our so-far-known knowledge and decisions´options. The more we listen and ask, the more we get.
But we always get lessons, if we do not listen, they might not be nice on the first sight. Once understood they have no more of negative impact or emotion, they help us to come closer to ourselves.

Tree months after my first response (4/12/08) I have doubts, because "what is dead, what is alive?", I now feel all spirits on earth can be students, it is probably beyond the human view of alive or dead. We are all students of Life, whether we know it or not.

When we navigate mainly in the material world and are absorbed by it, when the ego mind overshadows the self, and when emotions cloud the mind, then we are not students, we struggle to keep afloat. We are so overwhelmed by thoughts of survival that we are unaware of the potential of the greater universe and its visible and invisible forces.

The connection is always there, but not the flow.

Once a person has embarked on the path to self-discovery, very often after a number of hurts, he wishes to learn. He becomes a student. By changing gradually the priorities and the way of thinking, he will eventually discover Compassion and Love as awareness and consciousness grow.

But Life tests the student. Suddenly he is presented with new lessons and overwhelmed by ?problems?. He has to work on different fronts at the same time. Things can get terribly out of hand (for a while).

When we are reactive to external impulses, we lack awareness, reflexion and love; in these instances, we are not students. So, if everything can teach you something, you need to be aware and present.

maybe i am always a student, even if i don´t pay attention, because life teaches it´s own lessons and thus forces me to pay attention(e.g. violence, illness, heartbreak). but i imagine that i am a bad student when i´m not aware of my own reactions toward situations or people, like: when i´m not aware that i´m looking down upon others, when i´m not aware that i´m just acting like a good person but my heart is like a stone, when i am not aware when i treat myself badly and thus making everything worse, when i am not aware of my desperation and anger about my helplessness to help myself or others.

life is like an open book, all answers are revealed as long as you look at the pages that has allready been imprinted into our minds and hearts.our developments as a people and our cultures come from the single truth that we can both learn and adapt to what we develop our minds and hearts into. there are two dragons fighting in the heart of every man woman and child, and the one you feed the most will win. the winner will then decide what is true. therefore truth or what we can learn can be many things. the fact of the matter is, if we wish we are able to expand our minds and hearts to places not yet seen or felt by other people, but since there is no end to knowledge it prooves that truth is ever changing. what we desire we have made up in our own minds, and since the human imagination and the human reality is only one lifeforms answer, we can only learn from ourselves what we allow ourselves to learn. so our learning stops when we reach the outskirts of our own minds, which is never. chosing to be a student of questions means many answers. chosing to be a student of life means certain answers. certain answers bring enlightenment. enlightenment brings love for the knowledge you achieve, and our love brings hope to the world. one who means there is no more questions worth answering will never understand or be enlightened. one that accepts he cannot know all allready knows more than others. if we ask questions we wield the power to change things also. the meaning of life is a question. we must always be students. our proof of that is death. if we did not need to ask questions it would also mean that there is no longer anything to be affraid of but many of us fear things such as death. the questions are what makes us strech towards something better, i hope they never end, because they are what makes us human. it brings purpose into our lives. so i would say we are no longer students of life when our human mind is dead and our hearts have stopped beating because only death is certain.

The way I see it, there can be three answers:
a) When we turn away from God
b) When God cease to exist
c) When we become one with God

However, since God is in everything, (a) cannot be true. And if God cease to exist, we have already become one with God.

In the sentence, it is written "everything can teach you something" and not "everything teach you something". This is a big difference, because it means that to learn something (and therefore to be a student), you have to be aware of what you are doing (mentaly, physicaly) and understand the consequences of your mental states and actions otherwise you won't learn something (and therefore you won't be a student).

Only on earth we have problems, somewhere else they have no problems, because they have no earth- element. Thanks to the earth- element. The earth- element makes it possible, that we can use feelings, we can touch and we can train our patience. As long as we are connected with the earth- element, we have emotions and the possibility to distinguish between suffering or happiness. Wisdom, right view right thought, right speech, right action help us to prevent making mistakes and creating suffering. We are responsible for the emotions, that touch our mind. As long as we donÂ´t eliminate mental poisons, which create that we feel unhappy, weÂ´ll stay susceptible for latent suffering. Everyone is able to develop his mind (to infinity).
As long as we are on earth, life is a game of questions/ problems. The others are not your problem, the problem is you. Problems are created in your mind. The true nature of your mind is spoiled by the ego. The veil of the ego prevents you from seeing the truth. The ego creates the problems with judgement. To stop judgement, means to dissolve the ego. The ego always makes us believe, that we are autonomous. Dissolving our ego, means to realize, that everything has to rely on the being of others in order to be; that means everything is empty of a separated self. Because they are empty they are not really existing. If you understand this game of the interdependence of good and evil, wrong and right, love and fear, death and birth, you have no longer fear to solve problems. YouÂ´ll accept problems as chances to learn, to come near to you. You need not to be another person. The true nature of your mind is silence. Silence is wisdom- question, and the best way to come out of the problem, Lama teached us. We can stop thinking one fine day, when we understand everything,-even a piece of dust. And there is a lot to learn. We shouldnÂ´t be only observers, in fact we are also participants. Observing a cloud we realize that without a cloud, there is no rain, without rain there is no water, without water we can not be alive.
Even without any problems we can learn, we have to look deep in order to see. Sitting in mindfulness and concentration silence touches us. Silence is made of non- silence- elements, and needs our restless mind to exist. As long as we are human beings we have either the opportunity to learn/develop or to repeat the same problems/experiences, that we have made already always. There are always two possibilities to learn: voluntary or on the hard tour. ItÂ´s your choice!

Hopefully we are staying students our whole live. There are so many things and everything is unique and has its own laws. It is important to see things in the eyes of a child who is curious. Adults often make the mistake to be prejudiced because they think they would exactly recognize whats going on or what is behind something. But thats are stereotypes -an illusion of reality. It is important to be open-minded and than you are happy to stay a student the whole life span.
